The book that I read was Mental Illness in 19th Century. I summarized i as this lady named Dorothea Dix that was a volunteer that taught sunday school for women prisoners. She went to illinois to provide "appro[riate care & support for the curable & incurable indingent insane." Beginning of the 18th century "moral treatment" became prevalent school treatment in the U.S. Although it caused brain damage. Many fields felt that weak family, alcoholism & masturbation could lead to madness. Mentally ill were considered "genetically inferior." And there were many theories for this mental illness situation. Such as Darwin's theories suggested hat menatl illness could be eliminated through social engineering. Then came along new theories that promoted "rest cures" & treatmeant using static electricity. What I have learned reading this artical was, there was many different way that people tryed to cure this mental illness during this century. And that there many thoeries behind all of this. My reaction as I was reading this was this is crazy. Espcially at the end when when the las theory was using static electricity, I say that thats just really crazy.
